How many in all?

For Grown-ups

This page practices early adding from the Common Core math standards for kindergarten and grade 1. Every sum on the page is 10 or less.

  • Show adding with objects, drawings and equations (K.OA.A.1).
  • Add within 10 by using objects or drawings (K.OA.A.2).
  • Add fluently within 5 (many sums on this page are 5 or less) (K.OA.A.5).
  • Relate counting to adding, like counting on by hopping on a number line (1.OA.C.5).
  • Add within 20, with fluency within 10, using strategies such as counting on (1.OA.C.6).

Try it: put out a few spoons, then add a few more. Ask, "How many in all?" Let your child touch and count each one.

Counting on: on the number line, your child starts at the first number and counts forward. This is a big step past counting from 1.
