Subtracting Within 10
Some fly away. How many are left?
Hi! It is me, Dot. Let's subtract!
Subtracting means taking some away.
Count the bugs that are left to find the answer.
The − sign means take away. It is called minus. The = sign means equals, or is the same as.
Fly Away
Each card starts with some ladybugs. Some of them fly away. Tap the bugs to make them fly.
Then count the bugs that are left!
-
3 − 1 = 2
3 bugs. 1 flies away. 2 bugs are left.
Tap 1 bug to make it fly away!
-
5 − 2 = 3
5 bugs. 2 fly away. 3 bugs are left.
Tap 2 bugs to make them fly away!
-
6 − 2 = 4
6 bugs. 2 fly away. 4 bugs are left.
Tap 2 bugs to make them fly away!
-
7 − 6 = 1
7 bugs. 6 fly away. 1 bug is left.
Tap 6 bugs to make them fly away!
-
8 − 3 = 5
8 bugs. 3 fly away. 5 bugs are left.
Tap 3 bugs to make them fly away!
-
10 − 3 = 7
10 bugs. 3 fly away. 7 bugs are left.
Tap 3 bugs to make them fly away!

Hop Back on the Number Line
Dot starts on the first number. Tap Hop back to jump back one space for each number you take away. Where does Dot land?
7 − 3 = ?
Dot is on 7. Hops back: 0 of 3.

For Grown-ups
This page practices early subtracting from the Common Core math standards for kindergarten and grade 1. Every problem starts with 10 or fewer.
- Show taking away with objects, drawings and equations (K.OA.A.1).
- Subtract within 10 by using objects or drawings (K.OA.A.2).
- Subtract fluently within 5 (several problems here start with 5 or less) (K.OA.A.5).
- Relate counting to subtracting, like counting back by hopping on a number line (1.OA.C.5).
- Subtract within 20, with fluency within 10, using strategies such as counting back (1.OA.C.6).
Try it: put out a few crackers, then eat a few. Ask, "How many are left?" Let your child touch and count the ones still there.
Counting back: on the number line, your child starts at the first number and counts backward one hop at a time.
