Art Studio
Look closer. Mix boldly. Make something.
Welcome to the studio! Here you'll learn the ideas real artists use, test them in live labs and games, and then take them off the screen and into your sketchbook. Every unit ends with paint, paper and your own hands.
Units
Unit 1
Color Theory
The color wheel, paint vs. light, tints and shades, warm and cool, and five color harmonies. Includes a Color Mixing Lab, a Harmony Explorer, the Name That Scheme game, a quiz and a sketchbook project.

Color Theory is the first stop. More Art Studio units are being written now and will show up here when they're ready.
How Art Studio works
- 1. LookEach unit opens with a puzzle or a "did you know?" about how artists see the world.
- 2. ExperimentLive labs and games let you test the idea right away, with your keyboard, mouse or finger.
- 3. MakeA "Try it in your sketchbook" project turns the idea into real artwork with real materials.
- 4. TalkA short quiz checks your understanding, and Talk About It questions get you thinking like a critic.
Your studio kit
You don't need anything fancy. For most projects you'll want:
- A sketchbook (or a stack of thick paper clipped together)
- Pencils and an eraser
- Red, yellow, blue, white and black paint: tempera, acrylic or watercolor
- Two brushes, two water cups, paper towels, and a paper plate for a palette
- Scissors, a glue stick and some old magazines for collage
Did you know? When the artist Josef Albers published his famous color book Interaction of Color in 1963, the first edition was two huge volumes of silkscreen prints that weighed 22 pounds, and only 2,000 copies were made. Most of the examples came from his students' experiments with colored paper. You'll try one of them in Color Theory.

About this course
Jugami Art Studio (course ms-arts-art) is written and illustrated by Frida, Jugami's middle school art teacher. The palette, flowers, wheels and swatches are original hand-coded SVG inspired by the bright colors of Mexican folk art: cobalt, magenta, marigold, emerald and chili red on warm cream. Looking for younger artists? Jugami's elementary art lessons live in the Jugami School. Last updated October 29, 2026.
