Music
Crack the code on the page, then play it.
Sheet music looks like a secret language: five lines, curly symbols, dots and flags. It’s actually a clever code that has been around for about a thousand years, and you can learn to read it. Here you’ll name notes, find them on a keyboard that plays right in your browser, and count rhythms until the page starts to sound like music in your head.
Units
Reading Music is the first Jugami Music unit. Its three lessons each come with a practice game and a quick quiz.
Unit 1: Reading Music
The staff, clefs, note names, sharps and flats, note values, and time signatures. Finish by playing the opening of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.”
The Staff and Clefs
Lines, spaces, treble and bass clef, middle C.
Notes and Pitch
The musical alphabet, the keyboard, sharps and flats.
Rhythm and Time
Beats, note values, rests, measures and time signatures.
How Jugami Music works
- Hear everything. Notes play live in your browser using the Web Audio API. Turn your volume down a little first; each game has a Sound on/off button.
- Play with your keyboard. Every game works with a mouse, a touch screen, or just your computer keyboard.
- Beat your best. Each game keeps your best score on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- No instrument needed. If you do play one, keep it nearby and try each note for real.
Sources
We checked every fact on this page against these sources.
- Encyclopaedia Britannica, “Clef”: what clefs are, the G, F and C clefs, where they sit, and which instruments use alto and tenor clef.
