Telling Time to the Hour and Half Hour
Hi, I'm Benjamin! A clock tells us when things happen. Let's learn to read one.
Meet the clock
A clock has the numbers 1 to 12 in a circle.
It has two hands. A hand is a pointer that moves around the clock.
The short hand is the hour hand. It shows the hour.
The long hand is the minute hand. It shows the minutes.
On the hour
When the long hand points straight up at 12, it is o'clock.
Look at the short hand to find the hour. If it points at 3, it is 3 o'clock.
A digital clock shows 3 o'clock as 3:00. The 00 means zero minutes.
Half past the hour
An hour has 60 minutes. Half of an hour is 30 minutes.
When the long hand points straight down at 6, it is half past.
At half past, the short hand is between two numbers. Say the number it just went past. (Between 12 and 1? That's half past 12.)
Here the short hand is between 7 and 8. It is half past 7, or 7:30.
Tip: Long hand on 12 means o'clock. Long hand on 6 means half past.
