Code Club

Computers are fast, but they only do exactly what you tell them. Let’s learn how to tell them well.

Welcome! This is Jugami’s free computer science course for middle school. Computer science is the study of how we solve problems with step-by-step instructions, and how computers carry those instructions out.

You don’t need to know any code yet. Each unit starts with everyday ideas (recipes, directions, games), then lets you try them in a puzzle you play right in your browser. Along the way you’ll meet real people from computing history and the stories behind words programmers still use today.

A small green robot standing on a square grid drawn like a circuit board, next to a block program that reads: repeat 4 times, forward, forward, turn right repeat 4 { forward forward turn right } > 4 blocks, 1 square. Loops save work.

Units

The first unit is ready to play. More are being built now, one at a time.

How Code Club works

  • Read a little. Short sections, with new words explained the first time they show up.
  • Play a lot. Every unit has a puzzle you solve by building a program out of blocks. You can play with a mouse, a touchscreen, or just the keyboard.
  • Mistakes are normal. Real programmers get things wrong all the time. The skill is finding out why, and fixing it.
  • Talk about it. Each unit ends with a quiz and some questions to discuss with a friend, a class, or a grown-up.

About Code Club

Code Club is taught by Grace, Jugami’s middle school computer science teacher. Every fact about computing history is checked against museum and research sources, which are listed at the end of each unit.

The games run entirely in your browser. Your best scores are saved only on your own device (in your browser’s local storage). Nothing is sent anywhere, and there are no ads or trackers.

Already comfortable with blocks and want to try typing real code? High schoolers and curious middle schoolers can try Your First Program, Ada’s hands-on JavaScript lesson.
