Animals
Crikey! The world is full of amazing animals.
G'day, mates! I'm Steve, and I love animals. Big ones, small ones, scaly ones and furry ones!
Come explore with me. We'll learn what animals need and where they live.
What does every animal need?
Animals are living things. They grow, move and have babies.
Every animal needs food, water, air and a safe place to live. People are animals too, so we need these things as well!
Five big animal groups
Scientists sort animals with backbones into five big groups. A backbone is the line of bones down your back.
Mammals
Mammals have hair or fur. Mother mammals make milk for their babies.
Examples: Koala, dog, whale, you!
Birds
Birds have feathers and wings. They hatch from eggs.
Examples: Owl, parrot, penguin
Reptiles
Reptiles have dry, scaly skin. Most hatch from eggs.
Examples: Crocodile, turtle, lizard
Amphibians
Most amphibians start life in water. Many live on land when they grow up.
Examples: Frog, toad, salamander
Fish
Fish live in water. They breathe with gills and swim with fins.
Examples: Clownfish, shark, salmon
Lots of animals, like insects and spiders, have no backbone at all. Bugs are animals too!
